SSI Nitrox Diver Course

Dive Course navigator:

Nitrox CourseOf all the advances in recreational diving that have taken place over the past two decades, none have generated as much excitement and apprehension as the use of Nitrox.

Compared to air, the use of Nitrox by recreational divers is still relatively new.

Understandably, there are a number of misunderstandings regarding Nitrox.

Among them:

Some divers mistakenly believe that Nitrox is designed for ultra-deep diving. Wrong! Nitrox is depth limiting, however, it offers longer bottom times.

Some divers mistakenly believe that diving with Nitrox is more dangerous. Wrong! With professional training and equipment, the minimal risks associated Nitrox, when compared to air, are offset by the benefits of diving with Nitrox.

Some divers mistakenly believe that diving with Nitrox means you can’t be treated in a recompression chamber should an emergency arise. Wrong!
Recompression chambers can treat divers using air, Nitrox, trimix, helox and other gases.

The benefits of diving with Nitrox include:

  • Longer bottom time – because Nitrox contains less nitrogen than air
  • Improved safety – diving with Nitrox exposes your body to less nitrogen than diving with air at the same depth (providing you keep within the depth limits)
  • Less fatigue – diving with Nitrox means you breathe a greater concentration of oxygen, therefore your body is less fatigued after a dive.

The Nitrox course runs over 1 evening and 2 days. Please contact The Dive Shed for dates and locations for these courses. If you prefer to get a group of friends together we will plan a course to suit your individual needs.
